The second album released in '87, which solidified his popularity. In addition to songs with solid beats like "I'm Bad" and "Get Down," featuring the young LL's rough and powerful rap, it also includes the love rap classic "I Need Love."
The rap music born from hip-hop culture, which had been almost exclusively the domain of men, was completely transformed by the emergence of LL Cool J. That is, African American women, who had only accepted R&B/soul music until then, were instantly captivated by LL's adorable and handsome looks and the rhymes (lyrics of rap) that tickled their hearts. The trigger for this was "I Need Love" included in this work, and despite the fact that there was no rap chart in Billboard magazine at the time, it won the top spot on the R&B chart. Even before that, for example, Whodini's "One Love" (1986 / R&B chart No. 10, did not chart in the HOT 100 in the US) and, or even in the old school era before that, melodic love song-style rap numbers were surprisingly released from indie labels mainly in New York and New Jersey, but a love song that was not a rap number - in other words, a "song" - breaking into the top of the charts was unprecedented, and "I Need Love" is still talked about today as the first rap number to top the R&B chart.
